About Sunland
Welcome
In 1944, three Christian Science practitioners nurtured the idea of a nursing home where members of the church could come for healing, treatment, and care by Christian Science nurses and practitioners.
A non-profit corporation was formed and a charter secured from the State of California. Sunland was established to maintain facility and home nursing services providing Christian Science Nursing in accordance with the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, by Mary Baker Eddy, including compliance with state and local laws and regulations pertaining to sanitation, food handling, fire, labor, and safety.
Sunland provides a temporary haven for Christian Scientists who are in need of Christian Science nursing care or who would like a quiet period of rest and study. Patients, and staff alike, endeavor to express the Love that heals.
Christian Science Nursing
Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, established this provision to assist those relying on the teaching of Christian Science for healing. The standards of a Christian Science nurse are outlined in the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy.
A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.

Happiness is spiritual, born in truth and love. It is unselfish; therfore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it.

Our Inspiration
Christian Science Nursing...Caring for Humanity
The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, recognized the inspired role that a Christian Science nurse could play when an individual seeks Christian healing. His or her wisdom and compassion extends to every aspect of care.
She wisely understood that the reinstatement of scientific Christian healing is far more than a faith cure or course in unpredictable miracles. She writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “Today the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as an imminent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenal exhibition.
Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel of “'on earth peace, goodwill toward men'.” Christian Science nursing is synonymous with caring for humanity in a Christianly scientific way.

Our Sunland Leadership Team
Kathy Arthur
Executive Director
My heart is overflowing with gratitude to be here at Sunland again. Returning after a five-year absence to assume the role of Executive Director seems natural having previously served Sunland in many capacities, including Director of Sheltered Living and Hospitality and acting Director of Christian Science Nursing. Now as Executive Director my Christian Science nursing background grounds me in the precious work I am supporting- Divinely inspired and inspiring care for members of our church family. Sunland is a remarkably spiritual, healing sanctuary, and it is incredibly humbling to support its mission.
Jennifer Francis
Acting Director of Christian Science Nursing
I have always looked for ways to serve church and mankind in my professional work. In 2010 the ministry of Christian Science nursing moved into view in such a way that I knew it was the right step and the right time. I am a graduate of the Christian Science Nursing Arts program at Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association in Boston. I was accepted into the Christian Science Journal in 2015. It's my pleasure to oversee the Sheltered Living program at Sunland in addition to planning and organizing their social events throughout the year.
